Self-assessment (SA)

What is it? SCL Self-Assessment

The SCL Self-Assessment (SA) is an accessible entry-level product within the Safety Culture Ladder (SCL). It is particularly suitable for organisations that wish to work independently on their health and safety culture. This product has been updated to better suit smaller organisations, without compromising on content or quality. 

With the SA, you do not carry out an external audit, but instead follow an internal process using the SCL web tool. This enables you to gather input, set goals and make a self-declaration. 

Why choose SA?

The Self-Assessment is ideal if: 

  • If this is your first time getting to know the SCL
  • You want to work independently to develop a safety culture
  • You want to be prepared for the next steps on the SCL ladder

Please note: The self-declaration that you submit with the SCL web tool is not recognised as ViA evidence.

How does it work?

Step-by-step guide to the Self-Assessment (SA): 

  • Log in to the SCL web tool. Within this tool:  
     – Please fill in the SCL Questionnaire (SAQ) in
    – Please set out between 1 and 3 behavioural objectives 
    – Set out specific improvement measures in your action plan  
    – Please complete a self-declaration form 
  • If you wish to register your organisation with the SA register, please submit your self-declaration to NEN via the web tool. The fee per submission is €69. This registration is valid for one year and can be renewed for a further year*.
  • To be officially included in the register, you are required to employ or engage an internal auditor. This auditor must complete the training Testing internal safety awareness with the Safety Culture Ladder have completed the course at NEN or an equivalent training course with another provider that meets the requirements set by NEN.

* The SA (Self-Assessment) is intended as an introduction and to help you learn how to work with the Safety Culture Ladder. If you have submitted a self-declaration to the NEN register for two years, you are expected to choose a different SCL certification type (product) thereafter. For most companies, the next step is certification to SCL Light. For companies with up to 50 employees, there is the ‘SCL Light for small organisations‘ and the standard ‘SCL Light for larger companies‘.
