The Safety Culture Ladder (SCL) does not measure what you promise on paper, but what your staff actually do and experience in practice. To gain an even clearer picture of this behaviour and the underlying attitudes, NEN is launching a thoroughly updated version of the Self-Assessment Questionnaire in the SCL web tool: the SAQ SCL 2.0.
In practice, the old questionnaires sometimes proved to be a barrier. They were worded in a complex manner. We have therefore completely revised the questionnaire. Long, abstract texts have been replaced by key words and short, easy-to-understand sentences. This enables operational staff on the shop floor to answer the questions more quickly, more easily and more honestly. Furthermore, the SAQ SCL 2.0 has been directly translated into eight different languages, which significantly lowers the barrier to entry for international teams.
Baseline assessment prior to the start of the safety behaviour assessment
The questionnaire serves as an internal baseline assessment to identify current safety behaviour. The results form the direct basis for the mandatory action plan and the subsequent audit.
Focus on psychosocial safety
A culture of safety goes beyond physical safety at work alone. The updated SAQ SCL 2.0 therefore includes five new questions that focus specifically on psychosocial safety. Topics such as workload, mental wellbeing, equal treatment and the confidence to speak out to colleagues about inappropriate or transgressive behaviour thus become an integral part of the baseline assessment. The updated SAQ SCL 2.0 is automatically available in the SCL Web tool.
