Also for support in the area of safety behaviour
Once technical “safeguards” in the field of safety have been put in place and management systems have been established, it is ultimately people whose behaviour has a major impact on their own safety and that of others. Great: so now we know that. What next?
Geert Daamen of Daamen Support was already involved, through his “Heart & Mind” initiative, in the roll-out, provision of advice and certification of the principles relating to safety behaviour – which had been adopted and promoted by NEN – whilst Prorail was still in the process of designing the Safety Ladder.
Daamen Support’s mission in this regard is to assist clients in their continuous improvement and to help ensure that their management systems are up and running before they are put into practice. This is where the necessary conditions are created. This, in turn, requires a certain approach at all levels of the organisation. Together, we can then achieve excellent results.
It’s nothing new: it’s been the case since the 10the Training a peregrine falcon requires a great deal of patience. Punishment will never result in the desired behaviour. Rewarding desired behaviour, on the other hand, will.
Using the personal characteristics of ‘sociable’, ‘loyal’, ‘determined’, ‘team player’, ‘enterprising’ and ‘hands-on’, clients are helped to identify their position on the Safety Culture Ladder, to maintain or improve that position, and to obtain certification where necessary – though this should certainly not be the primary objective.
All parties will need to ensure that their knowledge is kept up to date at all times, and Daamen Support actively contributes to this by providing both solicited and unsolicited feedback on all aspects relating to the SCL safety ladder. Participation in the SCL knowledge partner meetings is, of course, a given.
